Have you ever woken up from sleep in cold sweat only to find that the chasm that you were falling into was just a dream? Well it happens with everyone. If you watch a scary movie or read something horrifying before going to bed, then it is likely that you may have a scary dream about it.
The association between the subconscious mind and sleep takes us to next question which is 'Does the conscious mind work when a person is awake or is it only during sleep that the subconscious mind works?'. The answer to this question is both yes and no.
While awake a person follows what the conscious mind tells to do, however the subconscious mind is at work all the time. Yes, the subconscious mind is active even when a person is awake, but the difference is that the person doesn't listen to it. Those who believe in the power of the subconscious mind would say that it is supreme (surely after the Almighty).
Mentions of the subconscious mind is frequent throughout history but a clear definition still elusive. It is because no one has been able to provide an empirical proof of its existence. The subconscious is most widely accepted to be a part that lies below the conscious mind. However, the characterization of this underlying entity is still sketchy.

Why Is Control Over the Subconscious Mind Important?

It is believed that the subconscious mind is the part of mind that is most closely in touch with our emotions and our desires. It is also attributed of having a better understanding of what would be good for us because it understands our desires, capabilities, and the extent to which one would try to get something.
Conscious mind gets swayed by what it sees and hears but the subconscious mind holds steadfastly on to what a person really wants. These emotions are communicated to the subconscious through the experiences and emotions of the conscious mind. While the conscious mind may change its stand, the subconscious knows the true needs and ambitions.
Some also believe that the subconscious mind is the creative mind. If it is made powerful, it would lead to us to the experiences that it speaks of. This aspect again highlights the importance of control on the subconscious mind.
Proponents of this theory use the example of people who tend to end up with incompatible partners over and over again, because they have fed this belief to their subconscious mind that they are always going to meet the wrong kind of persons. This theory also explains why some people always lose while others come out winners in all occasions.

Techniques to Control the Subconscious Mind

Now that you know the importance of the subconscious mind, let us see some techniques that would answer the question of 'how to control it?'. While some of techniques aim at establishing a link between the conscious and the subconscious mind, others help us listen to the voice that keeps speaking inside our head during the entire daily routine.

Self Hypnosis

This technique helps our subconscious to communicate with its conscious counterpart. It involves the act of awakening our sleeping subconscious mind.
While a person is under hypnotism, it lets his conscious mind take a back seat and make the voice of the subconscious occupy whole of our mind. Once he/she comes out of hypnosis, the words of the underlying subconscious becomes the guiding force for the conscious mind.

Visualization

This technique is commonly practiced by athletes and sports people to perfect their skills and to visualize themselves as winners of the game. It teaches a person to see her/himself in the image that he/she aspires to be.
For example, if you want to lose weight, visualize yourself as a slim and fit person. Do this as often as possible, and once you visualize yourself in a particular role, your subconscious is cued to propel you in that direction.

Meditation

This is one of the oldest disciplines that aims at training the mind. It helps us to calm ourselves and strengthen the voice of the subconscious. It helps to align our thoughts and realize our true ambitions.
Once at peace with an inner-self, a person is less distracted with all that is happening around and is better able to listen to the subconscious mind.

Talk Positive

Communicate positive thoughts to the subconscious by talking out loud saying 'I can do this' or ' I will do that' to yourself. Never use words like might, shall, may be, or if. Many have testified the positive effect of affirmative thoughts.

Listen to Your Intuition and Dreams

Our dreams and intuitions are ways through which the subconscious mind communicates with us. Intuition is the voice of the subconscious that so often has the perfect answer to our problems.
Dream interpretations may hold clues to what a person really wants or what the course of action should be. It happens quite a few times that a person goes to bed with a frustrating problem and when he/she wakes up, the solution is right in front of the eyes!
It may be communicated to you through your dream or the idea may just pop into your conscious mind as soon as you open your eyes. Whatever be the case, it was the work of your subconscious mind that was active while your conscious mind was asleep.
These techniques need practice and take time to master. They need a relaxed mind and body, and an environment which is devoid of any distractions. Nevertheless, results of control over the subconscious mind have been experienced by many, and they are a revelation of the power of the mind.
