Anxiety has become a common disorder for the modern generation, due to stressful lifestyle. Most people resort to prescription medications or psychiatric help for curing anxiety, however, neither of these assures permanent relief from anxiety.
Prescription medications only suppress the anxiety symptoms, so a person can lead a normal life. The effect of medications does not last long and you need to take them regularly. Although, it is true that prescription medications do not address the underlying cause, they are important to control anxiety, so that you get some time to look for other options.
Addiction to these medications have serious consequences, hence, these medications are not helpful in the long run. Also, there are several side effects of anxiety medications which include severe depression and an urge to commit suicide.
However, overcoming anxiety without medication is also possible with some efforts and patience on your part. Following are a few ways to treat anxiety without medications.

Overcome Anxiety Without Meds

Positive Attitude

Positive attitude plays a pivotal role in curing anxiety. Anxiety is mainly an outcome of fear, insecurity, inferiority complex etc. Having a positive attitude about you and others around you helps in constructing a healthy mind. If you feel confident and good about yourself, you are less likely to suffer from any insecurities or fear.
Thus, eliminate negative thoughts from your mind and concentrate on all the positive and happy things in your life. You can maintain a 'gratitude journal', wherein you can write down all the good things that happened to you in a day. This will help you to improve your outlook towards life.

Pouring your heart out to someone who is close to you, is a good way to vent out all the negative feelings inside you. Talk about your fear, insecurity or anything that might have been holding you back. You can talk to your mentor or a friend, you feel close to.
However, make sure this person is competent enough to understand your problem and offer you help. Although, this method is similar to a session with a psychiatrist, you are more likely to be honest and carefree in the company of a friend, than a stranger.

Mental Exercises

Meditation is the most important exercise to keep your mind healthy. It helps to keep negative thoughts at bay, by forcing you to concentrate on something else.
Thus, whenever you are gripped with anxiety, close your eyes and let your mind slip into a trance. Meditation helps reduce anxiety by focusing your mind on petty, insignificant things, so that your mind gets deviated from the problematic issue.

Self Help Groups

Self help groups have the ability to cure even the most lethal of diseases, through sheer mental power. The very thought that you are not the only one who has to endure the difficulties of life, itself is very encouraging.
When you see people around you, who face similar problems as you, you get motivated and have a better perspective towards life. This in turn results in a better response to the treatment.

Escape Stressful Situations

Stress has the tendency to accumulate, which eventually leads to anxiety. The situations which may not be difficult to handle otherwise, become particularly stressful when you are already tensed. Hence, it is better to evade situations which have the potential to induce stress.
You should postpone important meetings and try to avoid conversation with people you do not get along well. Try to keep your cool as far as possible. Anxiety treatment without medication is possible only when you are ready to give your best.
You can truly and completely alleviate anxiety, only when you learn to ignore the causes of anxiety in the first place. Remember, anxiety is a mental disorder and you can fight it only when you have a strong and healthy mind. Also, one must learn to overcome anxiety, so as to avoid the side effects which these medications induce.
